Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza

The Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza Foundation presents the kosher cheerleader at the Janet and Ray Scherr Forum Theatre at 3:00 pm on Sunday, October 10, 2010.

What's so funny about the Kosher Cheerleader? Sandy Gelfound, and every last one of the 43 wonderfully wacky characters she portrays in this hilarious two-act play based on her colorful life story. You don't need to be Jewish to love The Kosher Cheerleader. Before Sandy traded her pompoms and hot pants for long skirts and Modern Orthodox Judaism, she was an NFL Raiders cheerleader. But that's just the beginning of this dramatic comedy which movingly entertains theatergoers with real-life stories and lively song and dance. Gelfound is a veteran stand-up comic, having performed alongside some of the greats, including Jerry Seinfeld and Jay Leno. Her versatility has brought her to many venues, from live theatre to standup comedy at the Improv in L.A., Las Vegas and Tahoe, to television including Comedy Central, and for our troops overseas.

In The Kosher Cheerleader, Sandy reveals fond memories of her castanet-playing gypsy mother, her Jewish-atheist borscht-belt-entertainer father, her five siblings and a childhood dream-come-true of being an NFL Raiderette. While signing autographs in her uniform at Pep Boys in East L.A., Sandy has a spiritual epiphany, embarking on a path of seeking and learning about the Jewish faith and its rich culture, as she goes from Raiderette to triple threat 'Jewette' in this funny, yet touching performance. Comedian Jackie Mason says "She is very talented," and she "...had the audience in the palm of her hand," said The Ira Fistell Show, KABC 790AM. The Miami Herald states its "compelling... and engaging...funny lady."
